We have asked our brave soldiers to put their lives in danger time and time again, and yet, when they come back home, we don’t take care of them. Tens of thousands of veterans sleep on the streets every night and millions more are just barely making rent. Our veterans are some of the most skilled groups of people in the country, but when they return from war, there is no pipeline to good-paying jobs. Meanwhile, according to the VA’s own report from 2018, only HALF of the veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan receive the mental healthcare they need including folks with PTSD, depression, substance abuse disorders, and suicide ideation. We have broken our promises to our veterans. It’s time we repair them.
What Veterans Assistance Programs & Agenda Does Jen Perelman Support?
I will fight for a Medicare for All program that will provide universal free healthcare for all as a right including mental healthcare, dental care, prescription drugs and long-term care filling in the gaps from the VA. Under this plan, prescription drug co-payments will be capped at $200/year. On the richest country on the planet, nobody should be forced to ration life saving medication, least of all those who put their lives on the line.
Structural unemployment is a choice. I support Veterans’ preference. As your representative, I will fight for a Federal Jobs Guarantee and a Universal Basic Income. In order to defeat climate change and fill the gaping holes in our workforce, we need to invest in millions of new, good-paying jobs. Veterans learn invaluable skills serving their country and deserve the opportunity to have a good job here at home preparing our country for the challenges we face in our economy and in our society. We should guarantee a job to all who want one and tax Wall Street and big corporations to provide monthly checks to every American.
Crippling wage inequality and steadily declining affordable housing stock have created the perfect storm for a housing crisis in which millions face evictions every year and half a million people are living on the street including over 60,000 veterans. The crisis of unaffordable housing can be traced back to a shortage of stock in affordable units, unaccountable speculators, and a power imbalance between tenants and landlords. In order for us to end housing insecurity and veteran homelessness, we must tackle all of this head-on. As your representative, I will fight for millions of new affordable housing units, national rent stabilization, and a tenant’s bill of rights.
